1996 Questions for all other cars Engine Size unknown Wheel Drive Type unknown Manual 120000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi i have just aquired the above vehicle and have noticed that the water coolant requires topping up more often,i recently went on a trip to West Wales and had to top up with 2=3 pints of water each way, surely this is not right, the car is diesel and in all other repects drives quite well, albeit i have also noticed smoke from the exhaust when starting in the morning also an inconsistency in the temperature after driving for some distance to either normal/warm/hot, dropping to semi cold, even though the tempearture switch in the car is set at maximum?
Any help would be appreciated,

regards,

Mike

Hi Mike
Very briefly your engine is leaking coolant water from the water galleries, (where coolant flows around the engine block), into either the oil galleries or a combustion cylinder. The seal between water gallery and cylinder has failed on one, (or more possibly), cylinders.

As you describe increased 'smoke' emmisions and did not say you found small pools of water under your car I suggest the latter case. The smoke could well be steam. A quick look for evidence of oily deposits in the radiator water was the check in the old days but it is not very obvious until you are sitting at the roadside waiting for the AA/RAC.

DONT CHECK IN THE RADIATOR WHILST THE ENGINE IS STILL WARM - YOU MAY BE SERIOSLY INJURED.

Take your car to a Peugeot service dealer as soon as possible. The situation will only get worse and more expensive if you continue to use the vehicle.
