1993 Cougar XR-7 Steering Locks while Driving?

160K miles, 3.8 liter V6 w/ auto trans. This has stumped my favorite local mechanic. Driving down the road, the steering will get difficult, then it will lock up. Went in the ditch one time. The engine continues to run. The immediate fix until it happens again is to turn the key completely off & re-start. This is intermittent & mech, cannot reporduce so far. Almost seems as if the steering column lug (tang) or whatever is loose & locks the wheel. Any help. Suggestions greately appreciated.

Final Result: Mechanic checked steering column - OK. Replaced Power Steering Pump and Rack and Pinion.

Hey Jim,
Steering column issues are a labor intensive PITA.

The diagram that I have shows a steering column lock pawl, lock spring, and a lock actuator assembly. My "guess" would be the spring however without taking it apart it is only a "guess". Check the lock cylinder and it's housing also.
