1981 Questions for all other cars setting timing

My 1981 2 1/2 ton International truck backfires very loudly when I let off on the accelerator. It is an old truck with a carburater and points,etc. Someone told me it probably need the timing set. I have a timing light, but I need to know the exact procedure.
