air mixture screw

I have a 1985.5 nissan hardbody with 182000 miles and was getting horriable gas milage. i did all the routine maintenace and still nothing. so i noticed that the air mixture scre was super loose i could turn it with a point of a pencil. i turned all the way down and now i am getting 26 to 35 miles a gallon. can this mess anything up because suppossingly that screw comes factory set?? Can someone give me some advice!!!

lightly seat eh screw with a screwdriver then use a vacuum gauge and get highest reading tha tis the corret way to set it. it will probably go out a turn and a half or around there. what you did was ok
