I brought my car into the dealer for a routine oil change and they recommended that I service the catalytic converter. There are no present problems with it, but their rational was - many converters on the MDX's fail between 60,000 and 80,000. My warranty ended at 80,000. When and if it does go, it will cost $2000-3000 to replace.

They said they have had a lot of success, when servicing it, which takes about 4 hours and will cost $450 - it is a proactive/ hopefully preventative measure that will likely lengthton the life of the converter.

Does this sound like a good reccomendation?

Hi SaraG,

I have never heard of such a service before and a check with my fellow technicians indicates they too have the same findings.

Is it really the dealer that you sent the vehicle to?

Maybe that is what they meant "servicing" meaning replace it.

Haha. Will they service(replace) all 3 for $450?
They probably meant to sell you an emmissions service, which is common to some dealers; fuel injection, tank and engine cleaner, throttle body, pcv etc etc blah blah.
Main cause of converters failing is dirty, cheap fuel that people put in and yes they do start going as early as 50k cause of that and if you pop the fuel lid it says premium fuel.
