Sometimes I try to start and just get a click. I release the key and try again and it starts. I just put a new battery in. If I turn the key and then push in the clutch it starts every time.

clutch interlock switch.safety feature so children won't be able to start the car. same reason why you have to press the brake pedal before starting an automatic.
if you can start the car without the clutch pressed, the switch gets stuck in the "on" position.
there is a problem with the switch.
