Do I have to take my new car in for a checkup if it only has a little over 1000 miles on it?

I bought a new Ford Fiesta in May, 2011. I only have 1200 miles on it. I don't drive it often. They started telling me I needed to bring it in for its 10000 mile check up 4 months ago when I only had about 500 miles on it. I just wanted to know just how often I actually have to take a car in with so few miles on it. It is driven in town on pavement only. Thank you.
