My new 2011 Chevrolet Malibu 4-cylinder is getting the estimated gas mileage for a 6-cylinder. 17/26 mpg. It is supposed to be 22/33. Any ideas why this is happening?

Alot of it depends on how heavy you use your foot on the gas pedal and all mileage is calibrated at 55 mph due to Government regulations.

I do tend to have a heavy foot at times but since I got this car a month ago I have been very vigilant to not have a heavy foot. I was really hoping I would get the 22 mpg in the city which is where I do most of my driving. I traded in my old car because it was only getting 15 mpg so I am very disappointed with this one. I am wondering if anybody else is having this problem with their Malibu.

Your mileage should improve as the car gets Loosened up. The engine is tight yet so it will get better. My son has a 2010 malibu and he gets 22 in the city. If you live in the northern areas of the u.S. Your mileage is a little worse due to the cold weather. Check it in a few months and i'm sure your mileagewill improve. If you really want to get good mileage hook up a vacuum gauge and keep it around 18" of vacuum most of the time you'll get good mileage.
