Volkswagen GTI Clutch Problem
GTI with a manual transmission: When the engine is on, the clutch petal stays depressed and the shift lever cannot be moved into or out of gear. When the engine is off, the shift lever can be moved easily into any gear. What failed to cause this?

Does the clutch pedal feel spongy... not as solid as it used to be?
Air in the hydraulic system due to leaky slave or master clutch cylinder?
Worst case, transmission has to be removed.
