Most likely the engine coolant temp sensor is bad. To check it, you need to check resistance. If this is something you can do, let me know and I can provide the different resistances that you should find based on temperatures.

You need a multi-meter that can read resistance. Basically, you are checking to see how much power loss there is when you run power directly through the sensor. Based on different temps, that loss will change. The loss is known as resistance. Basically, if you put 12v into a sensor and only 10v come out, there is a certain level of resistance in the sensor.
