When backing up lately my car makes a sound like it is the power steering unit winding. It only happens in reverse, not when driving forward and turning left or right in drive.

Since you gave us no indication of auto or stick, I assume a stick. The reverse idler gear is a common failure on these units. The trans will have to come out to be inspected
