Hello,

What happens is the ignition tumbler wears out locking the position of the ignition key. I would get the key and tumbler from the dealer because they can code it for you before you install it have your VIN number ready. Here are diagrams to help you change the part out below.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

Cheers

For future references the problem was resolved by removing the shifter head and removing a small chip of plastic that broke loose. This chip was engaged in the shifter release button not allowing it to completely return fully out. This would not clear the engaged transmission position and allowing the release of the key. Thanks for all your help.

Transmission problem
2007 Hyundai Entourage 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive 57000 miles

Our Key was stuck in the ignition. The key will not turn back to take it out. While the key is in and the car is turned off you can shift the car into any gear. The gear shift button is depressed and will not come out.

Hi barrywasmund,

When the gear shift button is stuck, it would prevent the kep from being turned to lock as the key interlock requires the gear shift to be in park to work.

Did you try shaking the gear shift to release the button?

I had the same problem with mine. And read that someone took there's to the dealership and they found a small piece black plastic. Make sure your parking brake is engaged. If you are comfortable removing cover at the top of the gearshift and then take the gearshift off by removing the 2 Philips screws. Now clean out the gearshift. More than likely there is a small piece of plastic stuck somewhere keeping the button on the side from depressing. Tap it lightly on a table (if you have to) while pushing in the button in. Keep at this until The button depresses all the way out. About 1 inch out. Then install it back into vehicle. Easy peesy. Good luck.

I just did what Grandpanso suggested and it worked. I took the gear stick off and hit it a couple of times on the table and a little black piece fell out. I put it back on and it works great! Thank you - saved me some cash!
