I ran off the road today in snowy conditions. I went over some rock mounds and broke the black plastic containment piece that has a port to the air filter box. Obviously the air filter box is then ported to the engine. My question is, what is the black platic piece that is ported up to the air filter box?

Sounds like a Intake Air "Resonator"
It is there to lower exhaust noise and also to prevent the engine from sucking in water, which can hydro-lock the engine.
I advise you get it replaced if you live in an very rainy environment.
