I have a 2009 Ion, the service engine light is on. I just had it at the mechanic and he cleaned it out. Said some things were clogged. It was fine, but now turns off as you are driving, and now I have noticed a light with a small engine with an arrow pointing down. Its sputters and doesnt go when this light is on. So I turn the engine off and restart it, then all seems fine. Even when it just turns off, I wait a few mins and it starts right back up.

We need to start by seeing what code's you have and go from there. Go to a auto part's store like auto zone and have them check your car for code's. Let me know what the exact code numbers are.
