If any trouble codes ahd been triggerre, it would be recorded in the ECM and you can retrrieve the trouble codes, unless you have disconnected the battery or used a scan tool to erase.

One last question, are sensors the only things that would cause the check engine light to come on? I was told my an independent mechanic that a scan won't show anything unless the CEL shows up. So, what you're saying is that there may be codes stored and I wouldn't even know it if I didn't get a scan performed....am I understanding you correctly?

Yes, when an error occurs, trouble codes would be stored and if no problem had been detected for more than 40 start stop cycle, the ECM would self erase the codes, otherwise it would be there.

Sensors, ECM, bad ground circuit connections, main relays are possible causes of the MIL to indicate.

Can a fuel filter clog cause everything I mentioned earlier too?

Yes, a clogged filter would reduce the fuel pressure and during sudden acceleration, the engine would tend to bog down.
