My front locking hubs came out when I went to lock in, it was just the plastic part that you turn do I still have four wheel drive if I turn the selector knob on the dash seeing how I have auto or free or do I have to have the knob basically in the hub to have four wheel drive, they want over $300 to replace the lock out hubs and I do not have the money at this time

The question is if it is in four wheel drive or not.
The plastic handle should not eliminate your 4WD capabilities.
That is if the spring and balls inside of the hub didn't fall out (usually you have to remove the screws around the edge of the hub assembly in order for the spring and ball to be removed.
Check to determine if it is locked in 4WD.

Another thing, that plastic cap also keeps dirt and water out so be sure to eliminate that possibility.
