I am in the process of purchasing this car and have been doing some homework based on the carfax and maintenance records available. The last time it was serviced was at 88k miles (it now has about 105K). The service man on the phone told me that when it came in at 88k the previous owner was told it needed the turbo replaced. He did not have it done at that time. I don't know if he later had it done somewhere that never reported it. Is it possible that this was never done, and is still running all right 20k miles later? Other than looking for smoke blowing out the exhaust (this is what the serviceman told me to look for) is there any way to be able to tell whether it was done or not? There is also no record of the timing belt being done, as I know this is another major issues with these at upper mileage. Again, is there any way to tell if it was done somewhere that never reported it, or not? In all other aspects, the carfax and records are quite complete (at least during the 70k mile warranty period). Seems to be a nicely maintained car. Thanks in advance.

Ithe turbo was bad it wouldn't 'boost so the car would run like crap and you can hear it maybe if you rev it. There isn't any way to tell if beltwas changed. That shold be done in a kit anyhow which wold include pulleys, tensioner and water pump if run by that belt.
