2005 jeep grand cherokee 5.7 hemi. Popping noise heard from 1-2 gear. Engine light came on. I scanned it and retrieved code P0340. Only issue im having is excessive cranking but it does start. Engine runs smooth and does not stall. Does this sound like a sensor problem or a timing issue. Just confused because it runs great but excessive cranking.

That code is for the camshaft position sensor. On older vehicles a missing signal from that sensor will cause a no-start condition. On some newer ones the engine will still run on just the crankshaft position sensor, but it can require three or more revolutions during cranking before the Engine Computer figures out which cylinder to fire. Injector timing won't be synchronized to the opening intake valves but it's unlikely you'll notice that.
