I have a 2005 envoy, 4.2 6cyl.74,000 miles. I bought it with 70,000 miles & fresh oil change, checked the oil and it was a quart low, no leaks, no noticeable burning. Are the 4.2L noted for oil consumption?

I have to assume the dealer used 5w30 mineral, but I also assumed that the oil was filled to the proper level also, which may not be the case. I am doing weekly oil checks until I see what is going on. Would synth be a better oil to use for this engine?

I would monitor the use just for now, lets see what the actual consumption is like first.

Hey bryan. Have the same issue.I've been monitoring for the last year. Finally the warranty company is replacing engine. Mine has 62,500 miles, bought it at 44,000, burns 2 quarts every 450 miles hwy, abit slower city driving. As for where it's going. When jumping on the highway. Punch it. Look in the rearview. Pp behind you won't be happy to have an oil caked windshield but you'll know where it's going. Dealer says most likely cause "bad rings". Hotfix. Replaced engine. Make sure ya got a warranty. Not a cheap fix.
