would vibration from an accident cause the coil to start failing?

what would cause the coil to fail

Not likely say the 100K miles and 8 yrs more likely

No it would not. Coil windings go bad after a while and they do fail on these cars as with any other car. You can replace just the bad one for now or if you plan on keeping the vehicle longer you should just replace all of them. Once one fails the others usually start to fail as well and you could end up replacing coils every month, every other month just depends?
