Do I save gas by putting the transmission into neutral (automatic car) when decelerating and/or stopping? And are there any mechanical problems that can arise from doing this? (2004 toyota rav 4)

Fuel saving not going to happen when off accelerator throttle is closed neutral not goin to close any more. Better to have new air filter, plugs, wires and proper tire pressure. Also slow down a bit from 70 to 65 on 100 mile trip can save 20% fuel
