why does my car sometimes cut out lose and regain power all of a sudden and why does it sometimes die?

it's a 2004 grand prix. while driving i feel the engine "cut out" and then regain power right after. don't know how else to describe it. there's another symptom along with it. sometimes when i press the brake hard to come to a stop, it not only stops, but also dies.
