I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix Gt. Recently the engine has lost some of it's power. I step on the gas, and the engine surges, but takes forever to shift gears. I first thought that the transmission fluid might be low, but that wasn't it. I then thought there might be a bad spark plug, but noticed no difference when I changed both those and the plugs. Coincidentally my check engine light has come on and off a couple of times with a P0440 error code, which has to do with the emission control. Thinking there might be a connection, but don't know where to start.

Trans fluid full and clean doesnt smell burnt? Now just to make sure, the code wasnt a p0404 because that is a EGR pintle open code? Some things to check EGR valve for being stuck open, clean MAF sensor, condition of fuel filter(original?), Fuel pressure test, Plugged or restricted catalytic converter (common problem). Let me know your findings.
