I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand AM GT 3400 V-6. The car idles up and down 500 to1000 RPM. When I put it in gear it slams into gear. The service engine light is on and I've checked for vacuum leaks. Car wants to die when you give it gas as well. What could it be?

Lets start with what are the exact codes you have not code descriptions?ALso how did you check for vacuum leaks?

I don't have any codes. Don't know how to check for them. I checked vacuum lines for cuts or cracks.

If the service engine soon light is on then you have codes somewhere in on of the computers in your car.
