I PLUGGED A CAR VACCUM CLEANER IN TO THE CAR LIGHTER SOCKET, IT WORKED FOR A WHILE, SUDDENLY STOPPED, NOW THE CONTROLS IN MY DASH BOARD DOESN'T WORK, IS IT AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR I AM LOOKING AT?

You could have overloaded something best bet is bring it in and have it checked out-

Check the fuses first. You could have blown the one.
