2003 Ford Fiesta ECU

My car (Ford Fiesta mk5) had a flat battery and when trying to jump start it my uncle placed the wires on the wrong connections. It now will not do anything at all, no lights. No central locking. Etc. My mum went to a mechanic and was told you the ECU was fried and would take £1000 to fix. This quote was also the same from the ford garage, but when speaking to a mechanic friend I was advised this is not the case, and I could use a second hand ECU which obviously would be cheaper. I'm so confused as when looking online, there are so many different types of ECU for airbags, engines, etc. And I am just in need of some help and advice. Please.

The main ECU for your car, all the other are other computer/ modules. It will typically say also engine control computer, I attached an image for a similar computer.

Can it be a second hand one? And does it have to be configured at a ford garage?

Yes, and Yes. Just make sure you speak with the dealership before you buy it. Sometime they will not warranty the work if it's not their parts.

Depending on the cost of the ECU, and labor rate.

Sometimes you find the ECUs for about 300, and labor to install, a couple hours X labor rate. Whatever they quote you on hours to do it.
