2003 Ford F-150 Repair Question

When checking the individual coil packs do I go from the terminals on top to the terminal on the bottom where long spring goes to plug.
Trying to make sure my diagnostics are correct

if coil is not firing blue
need to replaced
if not firing at all
unplug and check for battery positive on one wire and pulse - when cranking on the other
