Several months ago I started hearing clanking (metal on metal) noises behind my glove compartment. I looked and couldn't find anything. My mechanic test drove it, looked under the hood, under the car, and in the glove compartment. He said it seemed to be something loose behind the dash board and it will be really expensive cuz of labor of taking the dash off/on. What's behind the dash board that could be causing this? It runs fine for the most part. The clanking is getting louder and louder and now seems to cause some vibration at higher speeds.

I do not remember if it was on this model? Remove the glove box and inspect the bolts for the passenger side air bag. If the bolts are loose that will cause some rattling noises. Other then that, the dashboard will need to be removed for further inspection if the noise is coming from behinde.
