what would cause a specific gear to "not work"? in this instance 5th i'm looking at a car on ebay

If the car has 300K on it and you have never driven it and have no opportunity to drive it before purchase, it is my opinion that you stay away from it. If 5th gear isn't working, there is a good chance there is internal damage to the transmission (due to wear). It could be something as simple as the linkage, but with that many miles, there are too many possible problems.
