Hi Guys,

I have recently purchased a 2002 toyota tazz 1.3 for my wife, she has it for about 3 weeks now, upon start up the car emits a some white smoke, after we leave it to run a bit the smoke stops. The car goes well afterwards however I would like to know if this means that the valve stem seals need to be changed or could there be any other cause for this smoke.

White smoke is a sign of burning coolant. Smoke from leaking valve guide seals would indeed clear up after a few minutes, but that would be blue. If you're not losing coolant, you could be seeing moisture that condensed in the exhaust system and is burning off. Water vapor is one of the byproducts of a properly-working catalytic converter.

Thank you for the speedy response.
I will be sending the vehicle for a service in the near future and will ask the technician to have a look at everything just to be on the safe side.
