My mechanic just replaced the oil pump and screen. Also the entire timing kit. He cleaned the oil return ports. Now the oil gage is going nuts, which I figure it is the sending unit. But I still have a knock in the engine (sometimes). When I shut off the engine and start it right back up the gage works and the knock is gone. Any thoughts on the possible cause?

The work you had done couldn't have been cheap! Id take it right back to the shop where this was done, and tell him about these issues.

It sounds to me like theres an oil flow problem. Whether it be from a faulty oil pump or engine sludge I cant say but you can try an engine oil flush. I wouldn't go back to that mechanic if I were you. I don't mind someone not knowing something but he did a lot of expensive work to your car to blow you off like that
