My check engine light is on. Auto parts store read code as downstream O2 sensor is faulty. I went to go replace it and noticed that wires on the flex tube have separated from the end (which is before the sensor). Could this cause the O2 sensor reading?

Of course damaged wires can be the source of the problem but also be aware that 90% of codes set by 0/2 sensors are not the fault of the sensor itself. We would need to know the exact code number to know if that is the case here. The people at the auto parts store are merely clerks and are not trained in automotive diagnosis.
