My 2002 taurus just started making some loud intermittent grinding noise. sounds like it's coming from the engine (passenger side). it does it while driving, in park and idling at stop lights. the sound lasts for five or ten seconds, stops for five or ten seconds and then does it again. It jolted while I was accelerating too. there is also a burning plastic/rubber smell that you can smell inside as well as outside the car. Any ideas what it could be? is it safe to drive to my mechanic who's about a half hour away?
