Ford Focus Steering Problem

Steering wheel does not turn left/right (can only drive straight ahead), battery light is on-what are the possible problems?

Do you mean the steering column is physically locked yet you're able to shift out of park? That's a major safety issue; something Ford is all too familiar with. If you mean you just don't have power steering assist, that coupled with the battery warning light suggests the serpentine belt broke or jumped off the pulleys. That's a simple matter of looking at under the hood. If it is not running the generator and power steering pump, you CAN still turn the steering wheel but it will turn hard at low speeds. Some drivers still get confused about that.
