The check engine light has been coming on ocassionally few a few months now. The idle seems a little off at those times but after a few trips with it on, the light goes out for a several trips.

I took it to a parts shop where they got the code PO443 off the computer.

Explanation:

Evaporative Emission system solenoids and system wiring are monitored.

Probable cause:

-purge or vent solenoids defective
-check connector and wiring
-Fuel saturated vapor canister
-Failed EVAP vent solenoid

Ok, what does all that mean? And is that someting that just any shop can handle or am I looking at a dealership?

P0443 †Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Malfunction. Yes, it's monitored. That's how the computer knows there's a problem. What the mechanic has to determine first is whether it's due to an electrical problem or there's no vapor flow when the solenoid turns on. The code suggests an electrical problem. Since it's intermittent, the most likely cause is a corroded terminal in a connector or a wire rubbed through and touching the body. Any shop can work on it but the trick is to get it to act up while they're looking at it. That can be frustrating if it's working properly because then there's no defect to find.
