2001 chevy impala v6 pass car losses power, requires high rpm to change gears also overheats when this happens. sometimes it will run normal as should, but usually it's causing problems. what would cause this?

This is a 2002 chevy impala v6 pass car 4 door with 155224. vin # is 2G1WH55K729213085. i BELIEVE IT MAYBE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER OR MAYBE EMISSIONS OR POWER TRAIN MODULE. WHEN THE CAR CRANKS IT IDLES NOT QUITE SMOOTH BUT ALMOST LIKE A SPUTTER, SOMETIMES IT IDLES JUST FINE AND WILL DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD FINE BETWEEN 15MPH AND 30MPH. IT WILL NOT CLIMB EVEN A SMALL HILL ANYMORE AS IT LOSES ALL POWER AND OVERHEATS. IT ALSO OVERHEATS ON LEVEL ROADS. THE THERMOSTAT IS ALSO WORKING FINE SO I KNOW THATS NOT THE CAUSE OF THE OVERHEATING ISSUE. NOW WHEN IT CHANGES INTO THE LAST GEAR IT RUNS OK.
