Can a new fuel pump fail

2002 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L. Fuel pump was replaced in the summer, died again in the fall, replaced again (this time with a new filter). Now it seems to be going out again. Last two days, my wife had it die on her while coasting to a stop. Started again both times. This morning, starts and dies right away, won't start again. Turn on key. Pump does not prime. Two taps on the fuel tank, pump primes and starts. Could I be so unlucky to have received two bad pumps? Is there something else I could be missing?

Pulled 2 codes from the engine. PO440 and PO452, but I believe these codes have been there for some time.

Did you fit a new pump strainer and filter and clean the tank out with the original pump replacement?

Replaced whole assembly both times (Inc strainer), filter replaced second time. I did not clean the tank as both times it had a lot of fuel in it, and I haemoglobin where to drain it.

You may just be unlucky with a faulty pump, the tapping the pump is a good indication that the pump is faulty.
