2002 BMW 330 Repair Question

BMW 330 Door Problem
My husband bmw is locked. His key fob quit working months ago so he never fixed it. He went to the store came home locked it manually and now the car will not unlock at all. Even putting key in the door like he has been it will not unlock at all. What do you think is going on?

The only think I can think of is if the linkage in the door has broken or come disconnected. The locks don't prevent themselves from being opened.
