I was driving down the road yesterday and the belt broke on the car. The a/c compressor has been making a whining sound for a few weeks. Im assuming that the compressor locked up. I need to get this vehicle from my place of employment to my house (35 miles). This is a 1.8L, with a/c. If I get a belt for this car without a/c, will everything go on there right and I still be able to drive it around until I can get another a/c? Also, will the a/c pully turn freely by hand if I check it or will it automatically be frozen up. I just wonder if I put a regular belt on there and not turn the a/c on, will it spin freely to drive it.

The best bet is to try and get the non-A/C belt, but it may not fit. There are companies that makes A/C deletes but that requires removal of compressor. The pulley spinning freely is just the clutch and they can in some cars cycle on their own and there is not much of a way to stop that without disabling the entire hetaer/A/C system and I am not sure if just pulling the fuse will do othat.
So, take a piece of string and measure the length the belt will need to be, remember that when you buy one it will be a little smaller as they are meant to stretch. You may find the non/A/C will work or you may be able to match one up.

THE CLUTCH TO THE COMPRESSOR WORKS BOTH IN THE A/C MODE AND ANY SETTING THAT INCLUDES DEFROST

IT DOES NOT WORK IF NEITHER ARE ONOR IF THE CLUTCH IS UNPLUGGED UNDER THE HOOD

IF THE A/C CLUTCH PULLEY BEARINGS ARE "NOT LOCKED UP"---IT SHOULD SPIN FREEAS LONG AS IT DOES NOT ENGAGE THE COMPRESSOR (UNPLUG THAT PUPPY)

IF THE A/C CLUTCH PULLEY IS LOCKED UP EVEN WHEN IT'S OFFWE'RE SORTA BACK TO YOUR INITIAL QUESTION

I'M JUST ATTEMPTING TO AID YOU WITHOUT USING A DIFFERENT BELT OTHER THAN YOUR CORRECT ONE----MOST OF THE TIME I'VE SEEN YOUR SUGGESTION DONE---IT'S BEEN TRIAL AND ERROR ATTEMPTING TO GET THE SIZE TO CORRECTLY TENSION THE TENSIONER---THE GOODIES JUST AIN'T IN THE SAME EXACT PLACES ON SOME OF THE WITH OR WITHOUT A/C CARS

DOES YOUR A/C PULLEY SPIN FREE--W/ BELT OFF. IF SO, UNPLUG IT AND GET THE NORMAL BELT FOR YOUR CAR

YOUR TURN
