Why can't I get my key out when I shut off the car? How can I fix this myself?

The solenoid in the shifter that tells the cylinder actuator to disengage the key may be faulty. Usually the shifter has to be replaced. Test the output of the solenoid/relay at the shifter. There also is a release on the bottom of your column that when pressed will allow you to rotate the cylinder back.
