my check engine light is on and my car idles rough almost like it wants to shut off also it hesitates to start what can this all mean

It can be several things. However, since the check engine light is on, that tells me there is a trouble codes stored in the computer. You need to have the computer scanned to identify what caused the light to come on. Once you get the code, you will then know what is causing the problem. Most parts stores will scan it for free.
