I have a 2001 Dodge Neon SE 2.0 I recently bought. It makes a loud ticking or knocking sound until about 1500 rpm, then it goes away. It does this all the time, hot or cold. I've tried changing the oil with 5w-30 and half a quart of Lucas. When I changed the oil I didn't notice hardly any metal shavings. I can't seem to locate the noise with a mechanics stethoscope. I've heard everything from rod knock, piston slap, valve-train noise, or even a flywheel bolt backing out. Taking it to a mechanic is not an option.

It may be a follower or rocker on top that ride against the camshaft. If you pull the cam cover off you may be able to see it. It would be scored or damaged. Repair would be a new cam and all followers.

I removed the spark plugs then added about 1 teaspoon of motor oil to each of the cylinders. I started it up again and the sound went away for a few minutes. No noise until I revved it up then it came back. Would this be piston slap and if so, is there anything I can do to get rid of the noise?

Short your cylinder out by removing a plug wire one at a time, if the noise goes away on that cylinder then that is the one you have to deal with, check compression first. If it's piston slap then the noise goes away normally when the engine warms up. Sometimes not but it really doesn't hurt anything oil additives don't do much good maybe going to 10w30 would be a better option
