2001 Chevrolet S 10 Fuel Gauge Been Fluctuating About Month Much Gas Today

My fuel gauge has been fluctuating for about a month, I never know how much gas I have, then today the check engine light just came on, the truck seems like it's running ok, it has the 4.3L V6, not sure if it makes a difference?
