Toyota camry has alot of play in steering, when changing direction I need to turn steering wheel about one fifth of a turn before it starts to turn

Check all steering components for excessive play. If all is tight, check the rack and pinion to make sure it is tight. If it is, check to see if that is where your play is coming from.
