Hard to start, ninety percent of the times it will take up to 20 minutes of fiddling with the key and lever

Very occasionally I had to hold the gear shift level tightly in the park position in order to have the dash board lights that indicate the car is ready to start lighted in red, P for park the multiple circles adjacent to the P light and the battery indicator. Now I can occasionally start the vehicle, very occasionally, as usual. 90% of the times it will take up to 20 minutes of fiddling with the key and lever before all the lights are on for are duration long enough for me to turn the key and start the vehicle. Some time all the lights come on and turn off before the key engages. The mechanical mechanism that connects to the transmission that allows the car to start in park and neutral is okay. I have changed out relays and fuses and the problem persists. The module that controls the wiring under the passenger dash appears okay and the relays are firm and pass a multi-meter test. I have cleaned all the ground connections and they have been firmly reconnected. I can start the car by grounding out the starter with a screw driver.

Things were a lot simpler when I build hot rods in the 50’s and 60’s.

Sounds like you need to adjust or replace the neutral safety switch. I'm not sure whether it's on the steering column or the transmission. Check for a start signal at the starter when it won't start also.

Good evening,

This sounds like the park/neutral switch that is not sending a signal to the ECM that the transmission is in park or neutral.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-a-neutral-safety-switch-works

There is no adjustment for this switch as it is bolted fast.

I would replace the switch as that will make it show the correct position.

I attached a picture for you of the switch on top of the transmission.
