My 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix won't start. The dash lights and radio come on when the key is turned, but it doesn't even try to turn over. The alternator is brand new. I just want to know the most common problems so that I can get an estimate.

You probably need a new battery. Sometimes the battery will hold a charge and show 12 volts when there is no load on them. Then when you test voltage while trying to start it it drops tremendously. This happens and is not un-common. Even a jump start will get it going but it will fail again when stopped and attemted to start again. You can get the battery tested at Auto Zone or Advance Auto for free.

First thing i would check is the battery then make sure the battery cables are clean and tight. Then i would see if the small purple on the starter has power when the key is in the start position.

Now see if the purple wire that goes to the starter has power with the key in the start position.
