Mazda Protege Engine Problem

I have 2000 year mazda protege 1.8 16 valve engine, manual transmission. My timing belt got torn, The mechanic thought it was an interference engine so he opened the engine to check on the valves. There was nothing wrong. After fixing the head and the timing belt, you can now hear some strange rattling noise in the engine, not sure whether its within the engine or around the timing belt area. Can I get help?

You need to locate the source and tell us what is emitting it or where it is coming from before we can help.

The mechanic should not have removed the head without proper testing.
