the shifter sticks and doesn't shift very good

i might buy a new mustang year 2000 with 82,000 miles and a new trans automatic was put in. the problem is that the shifter is sticky and doesnt click real well. Is this a major issue? or is it a simple fix... im worried its a rip off because i may pay 5000 for it. engine is v-6
