Recently bought a 2000 Ford Explorer XLS with 89,000 miles, a 4.0 engine, and 2WD. Vehicle had been sitting for a year prior to my purchase. When I bought it, it would not go forward in “drive”. When putting it in 2nd gear and accelerating the engine to 2500 RPM’s, the transmission would engage. Then I would put it back in drive and it would shift through the gears normally (no problem with reverse). Drove it approximately 25 miles prior to changing the transmission filter and filled the transmission fluid back to normal. Repeated the above process and drove for another 3 days equaling 150+ miles. Each time when the engine was put in park and then back to drive, I had to repeat the above process. Again, it would shift through the gears normally once engaged until the other day when even revving the engine up to 3000 RPM’s it would not engage at all and has now sat in our drive way for a few days. My question – is there an external switch or sensor that can be replaced, or is this “internal” that requires a transmission shop?
