2000 Chevrolet Blazer Put Into 4wd Auto Light Will Stay On Bit Tires Start Slip

I have a 2000 blazer and when I put it into 4wd auto the light will stay on a bit but when the tires start to slip only the rear wheels spin and the light goes back to 2wd. What can cause this?
